1. Read Follow The Drinking Gourd and have the students complete the sequencing worksheet found here. This could be done as a class immediately after reading as a modeling technique or individually by each student.

2. Divide the students into 3 groups. Give each group either the beginning, middle or end of a story and have them prepare to act it out. Begin by acting out the last part of the book first. Discuss why the presentation is confusing (missing the setting character development and conflict). Then have the students act out the second part of the play. Discuss how we now have the conflict part of the play, but there are certain key details missing. The scene has still not been set. Then have the students act out the first part and discuss how it has all come together, but now you need to put them in order for the story to make complete sense. Finally, act out the entire play beginning to end. This could also be done with a readers theater script.

3. Read a story to a small group. Give each student a piece of paper with a major event in the story printed on it. Have the students put the story in order and read it to the rest of the class or aloud to the teacher. This could also be video taped for use on review day for the unit.
